The Rear engine design has a much better efficiency compared to it's front mounted counter parts. It does have it's own set of issues. But due to it's position in the back, power transfer to the rear tires is more efficient (like front wheel drive cars with front mounted engine are more efficient than rear)
The idea of having one set of tires doing the steering and another set pushing the power is great, because it prevents the tiers from wearing out at the same time, it also prevents unnecessary skids and slides due to power AND steering on the same tires. Although front wheel drive are often seen as safer. There are certain aspects of rear wheel drive that allows for better maneuverability(through over-steer, although this needs a lot of training and can be dangerous, but guys love it). And with the engine in the back that enhances the stability by exerting downward force from the weight of the engine.
Almost all sport-cars are rear wheel drive cars for many reasons, and the loss in power transfer from front to rear (through drive shaft) is not desirable!
There are many advantages, like even weight distribution, and lower weight due to shorter exhaust systems. during acceleration the weight is placed more on the rear wheels causing better grip and better sprint, it doesn't suffer from the steering jerkiness that front wheel drive has when the engine is revved. Additionally, because no power axles are present in the front wheels, the turning radius can be as small as possible. Making it really fantastic to maneuver during parking for example.
well what qwaider said would be correct if u asked : Why is the Ferrari Engine in the back ??
but regarding VW , it was for reasons that go way back to world war II , and for that that car back then held some different features because the designers new that it was gonna be used in the Raid on Russia
1- Rear Engine : which can make the car handle more bullets or bumbs in its front
2- Air Cooling and not liquid cooling : abviously because any liquid would freeze in the russian winter ....
