Few needs of the human heart are greater than the need to be understood- to have a voice that is heard, respected, and valued- to have influence. Most believe that the key to influence is communication- getting your point across clearly and speaking persuasively. In fact, if you think about it, don't you find that, while others are speaking to you, instead of really listening to understand, you are often busy preparing your response? The real beginning of influence comes as others sense you are being influenced by them- when they feel understood by you- that you have listened deeply and sincerely, and that you are open. But most people are too vulnerable emotionally to listen deeply- to suspended their agenda long enough to focus on understanding before they communicate their own ideas. Our culture cries out for, even demands, understanding and influence. However, the principle of influence is governed by mutual understanding born of the commitment of at least one person to deep listening first.

From: the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey

Yep it's Covey alright, I might add the following...
It's even more influential to be able to speak and articulate and even communicate faster than most people can thing. The ideas you promote across will usually receive overwhelming acceptance when in all honesty after thinking of them for a little while you discover that they are worthless.
Take the example of a cars sales man .. and you can see this at it's best. There's hardly a single soul that ever bought a car and didn't feel fooled into it!
In politics it's even more important as influce becomes the actual job description. Management is no different ..

inti kaman? :D my brother has the cd, and listens to it in that car all the time.
I especially liked the part about how our paradigm shifts with new information, and how interdependence comes with maturity. I realised I have been stuck in phase 2 for a while, total independence.
When it comes to listening, I find I am mentally racing through a list of responses only when I am feeling insecure or intimdated. Or when I am feeling out of my depth. Recognising the issue is one thing... what advice did covey have for tackling it?

Qwaider: we are talking about actual human communication, not sugarcoating things to persuad people of something. What's the point of speaking fast and eloquently if you know you're conveying wrong ideas?
Abed: Yes it's great so far! and I'm not even bored :D
Qabbani: you're welcome!
Layla: haven't reached there yet but I'll keep it in mind. You should listen to those CD's or read the book, now that you're done with yout thesis :D

Actually Ola, we're talking about influencing other people's ideas and opinions not just communicating.
I take it that you didn't stop long enough to listen to what I wrote and were thinking of the response even before getting to the point :D

Nice advice...
We should focus on what the other is trying to convey rather than to drift away by preparing what to respond.
Seems an interesting book.

Quwaider: you guessed it wrong! :p I actually read what you wirte twice to get your point! And there's a difference between influencing others and pitchign our ideas on them
The Mo: yes it's very interesting, I hoghly recommend it

Read what Covey is saying, and continue on what I added, you'll notice the synergy between the two. You're not getting the point I'm making. I'm not guessing anything I'm stating an addendum to what you've mentioned quoting covey.
Anyway.... no biggie ... you'll remember my words in good time, they might mean more sense to you later on
