Ukiyo-e

Today, I've come to learn about a very interesting school of art, one from the far east, and more specifically, from Japan.

Ukiyo-e, or Everyday,  was an artistic school in Japan between the seventeenth and the twenieth centuries. It depicted landscapes and scenes from the daily life of the city, hence the name Ukiyo-e, or Everyday (Or as Wikipedia says, floating world). Many western artists were influenced by this school, such as Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin.

Here's a print called: The breaking wave of Kanagawa (1831), by Katsushika Hokusai.  It is one of the most famous Japanese woodblock prints. A copy today is bought and sold for millions of yen. Under the huge wave, there's a fishing boat, and in the background behind the wave appears mount Fuji. Notice the strong, clear lines and the dark colors used in the painting, all giving extra intensity to the scene.

C'est la vie

Well, my sister leftto U.A.E today, it's kind of hard leaving the place you lived in for 25 years, but I know she's happy... And you know I can now have more room in the closets, the winter clothes are all mine and we don't have to fight over the most trivial things everyday or so... This is good, she should travel, it's all good... YET, I don't know why, minutes before she left to the airport, a river of tears straemed down my face.

Isn't it ironic? Whatever path you choose in life, you still have something for the path you haven't chosen. I don't want to sound Hippie in this, but really something of us remains wherever we go, and something of the people, those we love, care for, live with, stays whithin us. No matter our differences, our clashes or our perspectives on life, it's always hard to let go...

Enough philosophical reflections now, let's get practical: What things are most probably to change in my life now? Let's see... hmmm, I have to do the monthly shopping alone, but you know shopping alone is not that bad, unless some freshman part-timer calls you: Madamme! It's not like I was getting lunch for the kids! I was only pushing an empty cart...

Well, it's not only about shopping, I think many things will change, but I can't figure anything significant now, it takes time you know... but looking at the bright side, I think thee distance makes you value your loved ones more, makes you miss them and gives you and them new experiences to share...

The important thing is not to let whatever distance take away what you have for them, and when you say: keep in touch, DO keep in touch! Actually it becomes more fun to keep in touch, you know those prolonged emails, pictures, videos... etc. Going away is not so bad after all :) That's life...

Aren't kids just cute!

We are getting killed

That simple sentence sums it all up...

As I was browsing Rafah Today, the best website where you can find updates on the situation on Gaza, live from the crime scene, and I came across this:

Mohammed wrote to me last night saying: 'We are getting killed'. [The Webmaster]

It's been a while since I wrote about the sufferring of the Palestinians in the occupied terretories, I don't know why, I'd rather not investigate the reasons, because I feel guilty, so guilty! I know little about what's going on in there, I never knew what happens there in details, and I urge you to visit that website and read some of the heart aching, outrageous stories posted there...

Hope this madness will come to an end very soon

Drama & Terrorism

Few years ago, when the issue of terroris in the Arab world began to surface, and there was desperate shouts to seperate between Islam and terrorism, and how the extremists do not represent Islam int heir acts...

The Arabic media, as usual, was there trying to make a contribution to the process of spreading this awareness, and since then we've been having that fad, meaning the Arabic TV series that deal with the issue of terrorism from different angles, but, frankly, I don't know if that was a good idea.

You know those programmes try to represent the terrorist mindset to the public. they show them in the typical way: a beard, the dishdash, the frown, etc. And then they start preeching and justifying the terrorist acts as "Jihad", and you know the rest.

As an Arab and a Muslim, I know that this is wrong and stuff, and that it's inconsistent with the teachin of Islam, and that the way those terrorist onterpret Qur'an as to justify their acts is wrong and misleading. But, the problem is: Not everyone who watches those programmes knows that.

You might argue that it's obvious and everyone should know it by default. The thing is, the picture they give is so negative that it can really bug the crap out of you, and one should have a very solid faith to shake off the images that might permeat your subconscious... Do you know that these series are being translated into English? I've been working on them for a while now, I haven't seen those episoes on TV, but as I translated them I was like: Okay, non-Arabs and non-Muslims are supposed to see this??

The thing is: If you want to do something about terrorism, then do it in the right way. I personally think that our media is not mature enough to tackle such a sensitive subject. When you make a TV series you have to bear in mind that everyone will watch it, from different ages and mentalities. You can't just make up scenes and throw it on them... It has to be extra-detailed and elaborate. When you show the wrong, you have to immediatly expalin why it is wrong and what the right thing is. Those new series are si confusing... Have some compassion for people's brains!

I have to say that not all of those series are equally bad or confusing, I think that Al-hour al3een for example was way better than the latest series, this can really get on your nerves...

I just hope that this will fade away shortly and we focus on more fruitful ways to spread awareness agaisnt terrorism

Books & books

So on Thursday I got my salary, and on Friday I was at Prime Mega Stores, going on a bookish spree... Oh my God! I felt like a kid in candy store... Allthese bookd can make you go dizzy, but you know the budget and rationale limit your choice to a few ones mal5oom not that I'm gonna read them all this month of course, but I couldn't resist getting them RIGHT NOW!

The first one is A child called "it" by Dave Pelzer. I don't exactly recall where I heard about that books, read about it or if it was recommended to me by somebody, but when I saw it some bell rang in my mind and I had that vague memory about this book being an interesting one... If I like it I will feature it here in sha'a Allah.

As for the second book, I finally got Don Quixote de la Mancha Horsier by Miguel de Cervantes... I got it in English though, not Spanish... Frankly, I want to enjoy the book, Spanish can wait! It's a very long book, but I am so thrilled to read it, and I hope I will be able to review it here... some day!

And the last one, a book I couldn't resist... It's an Arabic book, The complete works of Ghassan Kanafani/the short stories, (the second volume). I like short stories, and I like Ghassan Kanfani's work... so here we go!

Well, maybe this is not worth mentioning, but I also bought 2 of my favorite things: a hanbag, and a scarf! Happy a torqoise scarf... I love torqoise! And I had soemthing very delicious, watched a crappy movie... but it was funny, like watching Sasooki :D Though it was supposed tobe a thriller, Woooooh! What else? Yeah I slept over at my uncle's houseand had a good time with my cousins. Aaaand that was my not-so-weekly weekend report...
Have a nice and productive week everyone!love shower
